Why Game-Based Learning Works for Children Aged 5–13

Research shows that children learn up to 40% faster when content is delivered through play. Here's the science behind Sodafom's approach.

🧠

Game-based learning (GBL) isn't a new idea — educators have known for decades that children absorb information more effectively when they're engaged and having fun. But the research behind it has never been stronger.

A 2023 meta-analysis of over 200 studies found that students in game-based learning environments scored an average of 14 percentile points higher on assessments than those in traditional classroom settings. The key factor? Intrinsic motivation — children play because they want to, not because they have to.

At Sodafom, every game is built around a core learning objective tied to the UK National Curriculum. Number Pop teaches counting and number recognition. Spelling Bee builds phonological awareness. Reading Quest develops comprehension and inference skills. The game is the vehicle; the learning is the destination.

Age-adaptive difficulty is another critical piece. A 6-year-old and an 11-year-old have very different cognitive profiles. Our three-tier system — Ages 5–7, 8–10, and 11–13 — ensures every child is challenged at exactly the right level, keeping them in the 'flow state' where learning happens fastest.

The result? Children who ask to do their homework. Parents who see real progress. Teachers who have a tool that actually engages the whole class. That's the Sodafom promise.
