How to Help Your Primary School Child Improve Their Spelling

Spelling is one of the most common areas where children fall behind — but it's also one of the easiest to improve with the right approach at home.

✏️

Spelling is one of those skills that looks simple from the outside but is actually a complex blend of phonological awareness, visual memory, and morphological knowledge. When children struggle, it's rarely because they're not trying hard enough.

The most effective approach combines three things: hearing words (phonics), seeing words (visual patterns), and writing words (muscle memory). Traditional 'look, cover, write, check' works precisely because it hits all three.

But repetition alone isn't enough — children need to encounter words in context. Reading widely is the single biggest predictor of spelling ability. Children who read for pleasure for just 20 minutes a day encounter an estimated 1.8 million words per year.

For tricky words — the ones that don't follow phonics rules — mnemonics and word stories help. 'Because: Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants.' Silly, memorable, and it works.

Sodafom's Spelling Bee and Word Wizard games target the most common spelling patterns in the KS1 and KS2 curriculum. Children hear the word, see it, and type it — hitting all three learning channels in a format they actually want to use. Five minutes a day, three times a week, and most children see measurable improvement within a month.
